Description

Located in the heart of the Colombian massif, the El Oso reserve is an ideal destination for nature and hiking enthusiasts. This civil society reserve is located in the eastern Andean Cordillera and is part of the Cueva de los Guácharos - Puracé biological corridor, an important region for environmental protection and water supply. The Andean and high Andean forests that cover the reserve offer a pristine environment, while the Paramillo, Subpáramo and Páramo areas enrich the landscape with a unique biodiversity. Species such as the solitary eagle and the military macaw have been spotted here, and it is known for the presence of the spectacled bear and the mountain tapir, making it an important wildlife sanctuary. The adventure begins in San Agustín, from where we set off in the morning towards the village of El Oso, about an hour away by vehicle. We begin a hike of about 8 km with an average elevation gain of 40 m (a shorter or longer itinerary can be arranged depending on the preferences of the hikers), which takes us through dense Andean forest. During the hike, we pass two waterfalls and enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by nature. This hike not only allows you to explore spectacular landscapes, but also to interact with the rich biodiversity of the Colombian massif - a region that is crucial for environmental conservation in Colombia. It is likely that we will encounter rain, muddy trails and some slippery or water-filled sections, so you should come well prepared with quick-drying hiking clothes, hiking or trekking shoes, hiking poles (if necessary), a rain poncho and plastic bags to protect your equipment. It is also recommended to bring a change of clothes for the end of the hike.
